Descriptions

With escalating global trade conflicts, there are concerns about resilience in Asian trade and supply chain. The webinar will present empirical findings to show what drives global value chain trade in the region, how US-China trade conflict affects Asia's value-added trade, and examine the resilience of Asia's regional value chain. Especially, the empirical results reveal that US-China trade conflict negatively affected foreign value added and input trade. Nevertheless, it led to a small increase in domestic value added and high-to-medium technology exports in Asia, implying trade diversion. The authors will then share insights on the economic and policy factors that would affect Asia's regional trade and supply chain, therefore shedding light on the impact of tariffs, weakening of FTAs, and other policy shocks. The insights shared would be valuable for understanding how policy shocks might disrupt or reshape Asia's trade patterns particularly within the context of global value chains.

This seminar will be hosted by Dr Cynyoung Park, the SEACEN Centre's Executive Director.
The guest speaker for this session is David Kim, Associate Professor at the University of Sydney.
